Modern pentathlete Seo Chang-wan, who finished seventh at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has taken the top spot at next year's national trials.
The Korean athlete finished first in the men's final of the 2025 Modern Pentathlon National Trials on Sunday at the National Armed Forces Sports Academy in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, with a total of 1,545 points in fencing, steeplechase, swimming and laser run (athletics plus shooting).
Seo led the way in the fencing ranking round, accumulating 260 points.
He finished with a solid 322 points (ninth place) in the show jumping event, which was introduced to the selection process for the first time this year with the elimination of equestrian events, and added 295 points (eighth place) in the swimming event.
Seo finished fourth in the laser run, earning 668 points, ahead of Lee Min-seo (1,530 points - Incheon Sports Federation).
Son Jeong-wook (Korea Gymnastics University), Lee Jong-hyun (Daejeon City Hall), Kim Young-ha (Jeonnam Cheonggo), Lee Woo-jin (Incheon Sports Association) 파워볼사이트 and Kim Kyung-hwan (Gyeonggi Provincial Office), who finished third through seventh, were also named to the team.
Modern pentathlete Jeon Woong-tae (Gwangju Metropolitan Government), a bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020 and sixth at Paris, will miss the trials due to scheduled surgery to remove an iron core.
As only national athletes are eligible to compete internationally in modern pentathlon, Jeon will not be able to compete at any international events next year.
Seong Seung-min (KOR), the first Asian woman to win an Olympic medal in the modern pentathlon, will compete in the women's final on Aug. 8.
